Number of Players: 9
Decks: UR Artifacts (Steve), UB Ninjas (Paul), UBW Control (Scott), RG Modified (Adam), UGW Midrange (Dustin), 5C Shrines (Jodry), WR Aggro (Kyden), WG Samurai (Aaron), UB Midrange (Justin)
My deck was a WUG pile and I went 0-2-1, but would have lost my draw. I had the 0/3 Tamiyo, which was amazing. I took Kodama of the North Tree early (pack one, pick two) but didn't end up playing it. Cards in my deck that impressed me: Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student, Keiga, the Tide Star, Kami of Transience, Short Circuit and Geothermal Kami (supported by Azusa's Many Journeys, Tamiyo Meets the Story Circle, Inventive Iteration and Jugan Defends the Temple). Other cards I played and was happy with: Kami of Ancient Law, Kitsune Blademaster, Hikari, Twilight Guardian, Touch the Spirit Realm, Day of Judgment, Counsel the Soratami, Mystic Restraints, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Mist-Syndicate Naga, Kairi the Swirling Sky and Colossal Skyturtle. Cards I drafted but wasn't happy with or didn't play: Frantic Search, Kodama of the North Tree, and Genju of the Falls.
Notes:
- UR Artifacts is real! A very experienced player and repeat drafter found the deck and went 3-0 in the Swiss rounds, losing in the final to UB ninjas, played by another strong, long-time player. Kira, Great Glass Spinner was very strong even in UR Artifacts.
- The white Myojin is on my watchlist. The play pattern is: cast it, pass turn, Indestructible block if needed, remove the counter on endstep to make 10+ 1/1s. Twice I saw games end once it was put on the stack. It might be too strong, but so might be the other Myojin.
- Speaking of removal, Shrines (especially the original white Shrine) was a powerful strategy that supported multiple control decks. That's good; it's iconic and can be exploited by aggressive strategies, but playing against it would be interesting if there was a chance for counterplay. I'm looking at adding Cleanfall.
- WG Samurai was a surprise to see, landed on by a first-time drafter who maybe didn't get a chance to pick up on any signals -- to be fair, neither did I really (we were both in WG). His two wins came against me when he cast the white Myojin. I should support this strategy with more green samurai.
- The cards with errata were good, Hikari and Hana Kami were played. I still want to be careful with this and keep it to a minimum.
Other observations:
- Jitte seemed strong, not oppressive.
- Reality Shift is very, very good.
- I didn't see Genjus in any decks.
- Blue was more popular than I expected.
- Michiko Konda was strong and created an interesting minigame. Great card -- never cut it.
- Splitting Earth felt good. It did 3 damage pretty regularly in the UR Artifacts deck.
- The Invoke sorceries were great when played. I heard green and blue were very impactful.
