I've stopped limiting myself to certain sets. If a card is relatively ancient and it fits what I'm
looking for, it can hang out in here.

I'm aiming for old school, kitchen table, starter deck-vs-starter deck style Magic.

It should probably be noted that some of the most iconic old school cards aren't currently in here - Lightning Bolt, Swords to Plowshares, Royal Assassin, etc. Feel free to add these rad cards if you want the authentic old school experience! We found that our games were more fun and less swingy without some of the most efficient cards.

House Rules:

  • Mana Burn in effect
  • Tapped blockers deal no damage
  • Tapped artifacts are 'turned off'

Battle Box Rules:

  • Shared library and graveyard.
  • No dual lands. Players choose one basic land to play each turn. No cap on individual land types, so players can amass as many swamps as they want, etc.
  • Starting hand: 5 cards.
  • Last player begins with a Rainbow Vale in play.

Considering:

Expensive-ass cards I'm still looking for:

Next cards to replace with an expensive older copy to flex on my inner seventh grader:

  • Shivan Dragon
  • Winter Orb
  • Howling Mine
  • Meekstone

I'm dipping into Mirage and Visions for a couple cards. I don't imagine these additions will break the overall atmosphere.

Hymn is just too good in here. Like Memory Lapse, Painful Memories is gnarly with a shared library. We play multiplayer games for the most part, and Painful Memories will make for some cool politics.

Polymorph is rad with a shared library. It offers fun synergy with cards like Painful Memories and Memory Lapse, and I dig the gamble. Orcish Spy is on my radar for the box, and the two cards would play well together. Merseine wasn't great to begin with.

Knight of Valor is a solid beater. The Matron isn't terrible, but she's far from exciting.

Serra Bestiary has a rough upkeep, but removing a threat as well as shutting down tap abilities is versatile. It's good with Skull of Orm, too. Holy Strength is iconic, but it rarely goes anywhere but the shared exile pool.

Edit: Swapped Serendib Efreet for the Djinn. It's more dangerous to summon, but it hits real hard. The Efreet is just too good, haha.
