Valkano's Board Game Cube

Overview

I love Magic the Gathering. There are so many different ways that people find joy in the game... Commander, Standard, Modern, Kitchen Table Casual and Cube to name just a few. I wanted to create something that would somewhat mirror two different formats and a situation I have encountered many times. So I set out to create what I wanted to call my Board Game Cube! A blending of the all too often archenemy experience found in games of Commander with the fun, variety and challenge of drafting a Cube.

I envisioned a play experience that felt like the ultimate D&D boss fight. As a team of heroes traverse the multiverse trying to overcome impossible odds and defeat the scourge of a nearly invincible oppressor. One with powerful cards and tons of unpredictable and wild plays that swing the odds one direction then the other.

Rules

My cube is a 420-card cube that can be played and drafted on its own or within the game rules listed below:

  • One of four cards is passed to each player. There are three Copys and one Teddy Bear. The player who receives the Teddy Bear token will secretly draft as the Archenemy. The players who received the Copy token will be referred to as the Heroes.
  • Each player will receive three 20 card packs from which to draft.
    • Players will draft two cards from each pack before passing.
  • After the draft is completed the Archenemy announces themself and will receive the following:
    • A unique 15-card pack from a pool of 45 cards not available to the rest of the players.
    • The Archenemy chooses one of four scheme decks that best fit the playstyle of their drafted deck.
    • The Archenemy chooses a Legendary creature to be their Overlord.
      • Overlord is functionally identical to a commander except their deck does not have color restrictions.
    • The Archenemy has the starting turn and draws a card on their first turn.
    • The Archenemy starts the game with 40 life
    • The Archenemy has a copy of Fractured Powerstone and Ichor Elixir in play. The cards are phased out until the turn equal to their respective mana values (the first turn is turn one).
  • The Heroes each adds to their deck at least 2 battle cards from a shared pool of 36.
  • The Heroes each start the game with 20 health. When attacking or directing damage the Archenemy must declare which player(s) are the intended targets.
  • The Heroes share their turn, just as they would in a game of Two-Headed Giant (you each will progress through each phase of your turn together). Priority still passes through players according to their seating. The Archenemy must declare which player he is attacking with each creature or making the target of an ability. The Heroes declare blockers together and they may block for creatures regardless of who those creatures are attacking.
  • The game starts with a planar deck shared between all players. Each player is given one free roll of the planar die on their turn. Each additional roll costs that player (1) additional mana for the remainder of that turn.

The rules contained above are just a framework. House rule whatever you'd like and feels best for your playgroup.

I want to give a special thank you to @Ramhorn. His Board Game Cube provided a significant amount of inspiration for the design of my cube.
