This cube started from a simple idea: how many cards with cycling can I jam into a cube, and what does such an environment look like? Well, it certainly fills the graveyard quickly! It’s evolved quite a bit since then, but you’ll still find cycling cards across all colors.
While there’s often many ways to build a particular deck, you’ll want to dedicate your deck to a specific plan. That is to say: it’s reasonable to stay open until you find your mechanical lane during the draft, but you should look to find one. Good stuff decks are unlikely to succeed.
FixingThere’s a fair amount of fixing (typed cycling duals, MKM surveil lands, horizon lands, and one more mixed cycle), but there are few incentives to play more than 2 colors. Each color has at least two landcyclers for the corresponding type (e.g., Generous Ent)—these are the equivalent of fetchlands in this cube, and should be taken at about that level.
SpeedEfficiency is probably more important than speed here. Slower decks (e.g., Shigeki/Skyturtle) may take a while to execute their plan, but those decks still need to be using their mana earlier in the game.
Notable combosThere's a set of nine custom cards, all of which are lands that fill out existing incomplete cycles:
They're highlighted in pink and flagged with 📝 in the cube listing.
The predominant archetypes are:
Okay, Pyrogoyf was too good. That was always the most likely case, but now we know. Countryside Crusher could maybe give the {R/G] lands decks a new angle. If it doesn't work out, I'll probably try out Anger.
Slow, recursive strategies are maybe a little too strong, so I'm adding a little more exile removal (really, giving colors other than white access to it) and a few more one-shot ways to nuke graveyards.
Red's also got enough creatures that have fallen off over time that it's harder than I want it to be to have two primary-red drafters at the table. So, goodbye Viashino Sandsprinter, Drannith Stinger, and Reckless Wurm; hello, Dire Fleet Daredevil, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and Fear of Missing Out.
